I grew up in KCPC and cannot remember a time when I was not familiar with Rev. Won Sang Lee and his legendary commitment to prayer. It was only when I was older, however, that I realized how much he had been praying for me.
As I went to college and then to seminary, my PhD, and my present faculty position, Rev. Lee took an active interest in my progress. He asked me regularly what I was studying and teaching, how I was engaging my contexts, what I thought of particular authors. Given the size of our church, I was humbled and surprised by his care and concern.
My family and I began an annual tradition of visiting Rev. Lee and Samonim when I was home for winter break. These moments were great sources of encouragement, sometimes when I was struggling with failure and doubt, and they always renewed my sense of calling.
I learned in the course of those visits that Rev. Lee had long ago deferred his own goal of completing a PhD. He had dedicated himself instead to our church–the community that birthed my faith. In a certain sense, then, Rev. Lee’s sacrifice is what enabled me to pursue my vocational path.
Knowing this story made it even more meaningful to receive a copy of his published dissertation–completed after his retirement–on the pastoral leadership of John Chrysostom, a renowned bishop from the fourth-century and a model for the posture Rev. Lee would adopt in his own ministry.
In one of my last conversations with Rev. Lee, he shared words that have remained with me since: “Ministry is about trust relationships. And trust begins with integrity and humility.” Though simple, these remarks represented hard-won wisdom from a lifetime of service. Rev. Lee’s great legacy in my life is the desire to embody the same.

이원상 목사님께 바치는 헌정의 글 – 그레고리 리 박사
저는 KCPC에서 자랐고, 이원상 목사님과 그분의 헌신적인 기도에 대해 잘 알지 못했던 시절이 기억나지 않습니다. 하지만 나이가 들어서야 그분이 저를 위해 얼마나 많이 기도해 주셨는지 깨달았습니다.
대학과 신학교, 박사 과정을 거쳐 현재의 교수직에 이르기까지, 이 목사님은 제 성장에 깊은 관심을 보여주셨습니다. 제가 무엇을 공부하고 가르치는지, 현장에 어떻게 접근하는지, 특정 저자에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지 정기적으로 물어보셨습니다. 우리 교회의 규모를 고려했을 때, 목사님의 세심한 관심과 배려에 저는 겸손함과 놀라움을 동시에 느꼈습니다.
저와 제 가족은 겨울 방학 때 집에 갈 때마다 이 목사님과 사모님을 찾아뵙는 연례 행사를 시작했습니다. 이 시간들은 제가 실패와 의심으로 힘들어할 때 큰 격려가 되었고, 항상 제 소명 의식을 새롭게 해주었습니다.
그 방문들을 통해 저는 이 목사님께서 오래전에 박사 학위 취득이라는 자신의 목표를 미뤄두셨다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 목사님은 대신 제 신앙의 뿌리가 된 우리 교회 공동체에 헌신하셨습니다. 어떤 의미에서는 이 목사님의 희생 덕분에 제가 제 소명을 따를 수 있었다고 할 수 있습니다.
이 이야기를 알고 나니, 그가 은퇴 후 완성한 4세기 유명한 주교이자 목사님이 자신의 사역에서 본받고자 했던 자세의 모델이 된 요한 크리소스톰의 목회적 리더십에 관한 그의 박사 논문 사본을 받는 것이 더욱 의미 있게 느껴졌습니다.
이원상 목사님과의 마지막 대화 중 하나에서, 그분이 제게 오랫동안 간직해 온 말씀을 해주셨습니다. “목회는 신뢰 관계에 관한 것입니다. 그리고 신뢰는 정직과 겸손에서 시작됩니다.” 단순해 보이지만, 이 말씀에는 평생을 바쳐 섬기며 얻은 값진 지혜가 담겨 있었습니다. 이 목사님이 제 삶에 남긴 가장 큰 유산은 바로 그 지혜를 본받고자 하는 제 바람입니다.
